Reinforced foundation beams connecting structures and piles
Ground beams are reinforced concrete elements used to transfer structural loads into supporting pile foundations. They can connect individual pile positions and provide a stable foundation line beneath walls, columns and other structural elements.
Ground beams are often used where near-surface ground is unsuitable for conventional shallow foundations or where loads need to be distributed between multiple piles. Their layout, depth and reinforcement can be coordinated with the structural design and the selected piling system. As part of SPS’s wider foundation capability, ground beams also allow piling and associated foundation works to be considered together as part of a coordinated foundation package.

How Ground Beams Works
Following installation of the piles, reinforced concrete ground beams are constructed between the pile positions to create the required foundation arrangement. The beams connect the structure above to the pile foundations below and distribute loading between individual pile locations.
Beam dimensions, reinforcement and pile connections are determined by the structural design and the geometry of the proposed building. Ground beams can therefore form an important part of a complete piled foundation package rather than being treated as an isolated construction element.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are ground beams used with piles?
They transfer structural loads from walls, columns or other elements into the supporting piles.
Are ground beams always needed with piling?
No. The appropriate pile-head and foundation arrangement depends on the structural design and may instead use pile caps, rafts or other systems.
Can SPS deliver ground beams alongside the piling works?
That fits the way the wider site currently positions SPS — piling, foundations and associated civils managed through one team.
What information is needed to design a ground beam foundation?
The design typically considers structural loads, pile positions, building geometry, ground conditions and the arrangement of walls or columns above. Coordination between the piling and structural foundation design is therefore important.
