Specialist Piling Solutions was appointed by Colten Care to deliver the piling works for a new residential care development at Providence Hill, Bursledon, Hampshire.
The consented scheme comprises a 68-bed care home and three close-care cottages, together with associated access roads, parking, landscaping and infrastructure. SPS provided a combined foundation and retaining solution incorporating CFA bearing piles and driven steel sheet piling to accommodate the development across the sloping site.
The project formed part of Colten Care’s continued expansion across the South of England, with the development designed to help address an identified shortfall in specialist care accommodation within the Bursledon and wider Eastleigh area.
The site presented a combination of significant level changes, substantial retaining requirements and variable foundation loads associated with the new care home development.
Multiple retaining walls were required across the site, with excavation depths varying considerably between different sections. SPS’ Wall 2 design alone considered retained heights ranging from approximately 0.85m to 2.8m, while groundwater was modelled at approximately 2.25m below ground level.
Ground conditions consisted predominantly of made ground over clay, requiring a piling solution capable of providing both permanent structural support and stable retaining walls while responding to the changing site levels.
SPS developed a combined piling package incorporating driven steel sheet pile retaining walls and 450mm diameter CFA bearing piles.
For the building foundations, 230 CFA piles were installed, with pile lengths ranging from approximately 9.5m to 22.3m and a combined installed length of around 3,210 linear metres. The bearing pile schedule shows individual working compression loads extending beyond 600kN in parts of the structure, with the piles designed to suit the varying structural demands across the building footprint.
A series of permanent sheet piled retaining walls were also installed across the site. Different Larssen sheet sections and lengths were selected to suit the changing retained heights and ground conditions, including L604, L605N and L607 sections, generally ranging between approximately 5.5m and 10m long. Wall 2 was designed as a free-standing cantilever retaining structure without temporary propping.
The completed piling package provided the new development with both its deep foundation system and the permanent retaining structures required to manage the site’s considerable changes in level.
The combination of CFA bearing piles and driven sheet piling allowed SPS to deliver a coordinated solution tailored to the site’s clay ground conditions, groundwater considerations and varying structural requirements.
Once complete, the foundations and retaining walls created the stable platform required for construction of Colten Care’s new 68-bed care home and three close-care cottages, helping enable a major new care facility for the Bursledon area.
